Sachsenhausen national memorial

Sachsenhausen national memorial was opened in 1961 after the site had suffered years of neglect and military use. It was the third such memorial to be opened in the GDR after Buchenwald and Ravensbr├╝ck. The memorial covered the site of the old prisoner's camp and included a memorial which changed the shape of the old camp. The memorial encompassed only around five percent of the site of the concentration camp, the rest was used mainly by the military until 1990.
