Exhibition opening – “… we resisted whichever way we could.” Resistance in Ravensbrück Women’s Concentration Camp

An exhibition by the German Resistance Memorial Center in cooperation with the Ravensbrück Memorial Museum
Despite the threat of death, malnutrition and constant surveillance, resistance was possible even in concentration camps. Under the extreme conditions of the camps, however, it took different forms than outside. Resistance often showed itself in everyday acts of self-assertion, such as holding on to religious rituals or taking part in shared cultural activities.
Despite the threat of severe punishment, some women dared to sabotage forced labour in the armaments industry, to refuse orders or to smuggle documents out of the camp in order to bear witness to the crimes of the SS.
At the centre of the exhibition are the lives and acts of resistance of sixteen women imprisoned in Ravensbrück concentration camp, who used what room for action they had to oppose the Nazi regime.
At the opening, Dr Andrea Genest, director of the Ravensbrück Memorial Museum, will speak about resistance in Ravensbrück. The curator, Dr Stefanie Steinbach, will introduce the exhibition.

The exhibition is on view from 24 September 2026 to 4 April 2027 in the temporary exhibition area on the first floor of the German Resistance Memorial Center.
