Open-air cinema evening in the city park by Schwedtsee
31. July 2026 – 21:30 Uhr
The film being shown is: “Pride” (2014), directed by Matthew Warchus, screenplay by Stephen Beesford
The film touches on several highly relevant social issues that shaped Britain in the 1980s.
In the summer of 1984, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher waged a bitter battle against the National Union of Mineworkers, which was on strike against the privatisation and closure of the mines. Help arrived from an unexpected quarter: the ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’ (LGSM) campaign raised money to support the strike fund. However, the National Union of Mineworkers harbours numerous prejudices and initially rejects the support.
Consequently, a small group led by bookseller Mike (Joseph Gilgun) and activist Mark (Ben Schnetzer) decides to travel directly to a Welsh village to hand over the donations in person. Although they encounter prejudice and, in some cases, rejection there too, a large part of the village community welcomes the supporters warmly. The local leader of the strikers, Dai (Paddy Considine), also welcomes the collaboration and advocates a joint approach.
Based on true events, the film sensitively depicts the coming together of two very different activist groups who join forces to fight against the closure of the mines. The film won the British Independent Film Award for Best British Independent Film in recognition of its powerful portrayal of solidarity.
