Panel discussions - Voices of the 2nd and 3rd Generation
13. April 2024 – 16:30 - 18:00 Uhr
Two panel discussions with relatives of victims of Nazi persecution and scholars on the effects of Nazi crimes on the second and third generation of survivors. The discussion will be moderated by Andreas Genest, Director of the Ravensbrück Memorial Museum.
16:30 – 17:15 hrs
Panel I. Identity & the struggle for recognition
with Ib Katznelson, Katarzyna Piotrowska-Cholewińska and Petra Rosenberg
The effects of their time in the Ravensbrück concentration camp on the children of survivors are complex. The experiences of the mothers in the camp vary depending on the reason for their persecution, the length of their stay and the time of their imprisonment. In addition, the living conditions of the families after 1945 had a decisive influence on how and when the experiences could be processed or shared.
The first panel sheds light on these different life experiences of the 2nd and 3rd generations of Ravensbrück survivors from a biographical perspective. Relatives will report on how the experiences of family members shaped their own lives and how they understand their role in the work of remembrance.
17:15 – 18:00 hrs
Panel II. Society & self-determination
with Sharon Adler, journalist & photographer; Adina Dymczyk, AMCHA Berlin and Matthias Heyl, Head of the Education Department of Ravensbrück Memorial
Post-Nazi society's treatment of survivors and their relatives was characterized by silence, ignorance and a refusal to acknowledge their own responsibility for the crimes. The 2nd and 3rd generations of survivors play a decisive role in breaking this silence through social engagement and overcoming trauma.
The second panel will focus on the role of the 2nd and 3rd generations as social actors.
